
Union Catholic’s track and field team delivered a dominant performance at the Union County Championships on January 22, securing both the boys’ and girls’ titles. Their outstanding efforts and teamwork led them to victory, reaffirming their status as one of the best track programs in New Jersey.
Union Catholic athletes excelled across multiple events, from sprints to relays, with several standout performances. Sophomore Danny Kuran ’27 set a personal best in the 1600-meter run, finishing with a time of 4:21.03. Sophomore distance runner Paige Shepard ’27 also claimed gold in the 800 with a time of 2:08, which was a meet record and NJ #6 All-Time. Coach Mike McCabe praised the team’s determination and commitment, saying, “This team is special. Our athletes work hard, and it’s great to see their efforts pay off.”
In addition to their individual achievements, Union Catholic’s relay teams delivered remarkable performances. The girls’ 4×400 relay team finished first with a time of 3:55.09. “Winning as a team makes all the training worth it,” said hurdler Chris Wilson ’25. “We push each other every day, and that’s what makes us strong.”

Union Catholic’s track and field program has a history of success, consistently developing top-tier athletes who go on to compete at the collegiate level. Their continued dominance at the county championships highlights their dedication and tradition of excellence.
With another championship sweep, Union Catholic has solidified its position as a powerhouse in high school track and field. As the season progresses, the Vikings aim to carry their momentum into the upcoming state and national competitions. If their county championship performance is any indication, they are well-prepared to take on any challenges ahead.
