On Saturday, September 20th, at 9:30 p.m., the Union Catholic girls’ varsity cross country team demonstrated its exceptional speed and determination at the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic in Irvine, California. Competing against top-tier talent from across the nation, the team aimed to gain valuable experience in a highly competitive setting.
The Woodbridge Cross Country Classic, held annually at Great Park in Irvine, is renowned as “the ultimate early-season competition” and offers a unique opportunity for night racing. This year marked the 44th anniversary of the event, and it was Union Catholic’s debut appearance.
Arriving in California on September 17th, the team checked into the Hilton Santa Ana Orange County airport hotel. Despite the challenge of adapting to the time difference, they had three days to acclimate. Head Coach McCabe reflected, “Next time, I would choose a nicer hotel with food options nearby and closer to the course.”
The team’s preparation included practice sessions at a nearby recreational park, followed by training on the actual course at Great Park on September 18th and 19th. Cayleigh Kaiser, a varsity runner, expressed her confidence, stating, “I felt prepared for this race with my summer training and mileage. It was going to be hard, but I was ready.”
As race night arrived, the atmosphere was intense. “I wasn’t too nervous until I got to the starting line,” Kaiser admitted. Despite the nerves, the Union Catholic girls excelled, securing second place in the prestigious sweepstakes race. Coach McCabe proudly noted, “Our goal was to finish in the top 3, and we exceeded expectations by placing 2nd.”
The team attended the meet to challenge their skills against a formidable field and navigate a distinct course. Kaiser described the course as “extraordinarily different,” highlighting its flat terrain and sharp turns. “The energy was electric, and running there was an amazing opportunity,” said Kaiser.
Overall, the meet was a triumph for Union Catholic, boosting the team’s confidence for the remainder of the season. “I feel very good about the season ahead! This is the strongest and deepest girls’ team in NJ history,” Coach McCabe remarked optimistically.
