Union Catholic offers a variety of options for spring sports, such as baseball, softball, and track and field. These are just three of the many sports offered. All home games take place at Union Catholic, with all athletic fields located behind the school. These sports aim to allow students to showcase their talents in the sports they love while building relationships with others who share similar talents and interests.
The softball, baseball, and track and field teams have been performing fairly well this year in their respective games and meets. The softball team, led by first-year head coach and UC teacher Alexander Bonadies, has faced various challenges and tough opponents throughout the year but has persevered. Despite their record, they have shown resilience and determination.
The baseball team, under the guidance of third-year head coach Anthony Colletti Jr., started the year with a strong home win against cross-town rival Scotch Plains-Fanwood, triumphing 8-3. They have faced adversity like every other team at Union Catholic. The track team, on the other hand, has been dominant throughout the spring season, sweeping through their competition and even setting a new national record at the prestigious Penn Relays in the 4×800 event.
All three teams are looking to finish their strong spring seasons with the state tournament for baseball and softball, and the New Balance Outdoor Nationals for the track and field teams. The Union Catholic baseball team concluded their regular season with a 15-8 record, securing a 4-1 victory over Metuchen. Despite their losses, the team has shown outstanding performance and resilience throughout the year.
Coach Colletti has guided the team through challenges, and they are set to face off against Camden Catholic in the NJSIAA South Non-Public A state tournament. The track team, under the leadership of veteran coach Mike McCabe, has had a successful season, winning championships and breaking records. The girls’ track and field teams have excelled, with multiple runners setting records at various levels.
The spring sports at Union Catholic provide students with the opportunity to showcase their athletic talents, learn life skills such as time management and responsibility, and build new relationships. It’s not just about winning but also about personal growth and development.
