As winter winds come about, many people are tempted to stay indoors by their heaters. However, staying active during this chilly time is key to maintaining both physical and mental health. Winter offers a variety of outdoor and indoor activities to keep you moving, from skiing and snowboarding to indoor sports and even recreational activities like sledding. The winter season has a lot to offer, and it’s a shame people spend their time at home instead of outside having fun.
From skiing and snowboarding to ice skating and snowshoeing, winter sports provide many fun ways to stay active. Other options include hiking, indoor rock climbing, and yoga. Instead of sitting at home, trying out these activities helps you stay active and combat the seasonal blues. Texas Health finds that 5% of the population even becomes depressed due to a lack of sunlight during winter. Once upon a time, winter was deadly and harsh, but in today’s world, winter can be a fun time to learn something new and bond with others.
One student, Jayden, often spent his winters at home. However, after getting out and about in the snow, he said, “I never knew skiing could be so fun. I used to see snow as a sign to stay indoors, but now I see it as a new opportunity to get active. After this experience, winter is now a season I look forward to!” Jayden even admits that he used to hate winter. As a kid, he was always annoyed when snow came down and locked him inside, blocking him from his favorite activities. “I missed the sun and the warm summers.”
Another person, Meara, actually said, “Winter is my favorite. I love going ice skating, and winter is the perfect time to go, especially with friends.” Meara even explained how she finds herself more social during winter since more of her friends are willing to go ice skating.
Both Jayden and Meara serve as examples of how staying active in winter can actually be fun. There are lots of things to do outside during the wintertime, and it can help with both physical and mental health. If you’re someone who often stays indoors, consider going skiing or ice skating this season; maybe you will find a new hobby!
