Throughout the United States’ history, the Labor Movement has been a systematic effort, offering various opportunities and protections to working individuals. This movement has been formally acknowledged for supporting workers’ rights while fighting against unfair wages, inhumane working conditions, and more. More prominently, these endeavors began at the conclusion of the 18th century and the opening of the 19th century. In 1866, the National Labor Union was established. This collective called for significant Congressional assistance and broke through common occupational barriers. Similarly, this period in history evoked a sense of change and an eagerness to alter the state of a typical working environment. Many citizens fought against major corporations and corrupt business leaders while urging an end to cruel working conditions. These efforts were demonstrated through protests, the creation of unions, and a call for political change.

As the 21st century progresses, unions continue allowing individuals to pursue their passions while preserving all employment rights. Certain unions allow members to shadow other participants, further advancing their current crafts and careers. A few specific labor unions include the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry, and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). These groups are beneficial additions to the employment sector and the livelihood of the working class. Furthermore, labor unions continue to support the needs of all blue-collar families. In today’s economic climate, families require a livable wage, proper health benefits, and job security to merely survive. Labor unions, notably the International Union of Operating Engineers, fulfill these needs through frequent negotiations with employers and the development of updated contracts. These improvements assist families in their ability to afford life’s basic necessities and achieve financial stability. Overall, the development of the Labor Movement has provided significant backing for laborers, impacting individuals globally and for generations to come.
