The hit Broadway musical Wicked is finally getting a movie adaptation. Starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, the film brings the world of Oz to life in a whole new way. With a talented cast, incredible visuals, and all the classic songs fans love, the excitement is already building.
Since Wicked debuted on Broadway in 2003, fans have been hoping for a movie version. The film, directed by Jon M. Chu, will be split into two parts, with the first was released in November 2024. “We wanted to do justice to the story and make sure every detail is perfect,” Chu said in an interview. Making two movies instead of one allows for a deeper look at the friendships, conflicts, and magic that made Wicked so popular.
Along with Erivo and Grande, the cast includes Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard. The movie has been in the works for years but faced delays due to the pandemic and scheduling issues. Now that the film has debuted, the fans are embracing the stunning sets, costumes, and special effects.
Many fans are already thrilled about the casting choices. “Cynthia and Ariana were made for this role,” said Kayla, a Union Catholic High School student. Bringing Wicked to the big screen was a challenge, especially when it came to keeping the heart of the musical while expanding it for film. Chu worked closely with composer Stephen Schwartz and writer Winnie Holzman to make sure the movie stays true to the original while adding new elements. “We want longtime fans to feel at home while also giving new audiences a reason to fall in love with Wicked,” Chu said.
With its amazing cast, breathtaking visuals, and unforgettable story, Wicked is one of the biggest movie musicals in years. Fans can still catch Elphaba and Glinda’s story in some theaters, and all indications are that Wicked is a magical experience for everyone.
